Course Description
Students enter school with a great deal of informal problem solving knowledge. Learn to tap into this knowledge. This course introduces a research base known as Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI). CGI is a framework which uses knowledge of children's thinking in mathematics to make instructional decisions. Emphasizing problem solving and a language-rich environment as a means for children to reveal their thinking, the class focuses on specific research on children's development of number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and base ten understanding. Explore how each teacher can implement CGI based on their own teaching style. NOTE: This course has additional out-of-class hours. Target audience: teachers K-3; enrichment, special education, Title I teachers.
