Course Description
This course explores the needs of middle and secondary level students as they make the transition from "emergent" to "fluent" readers. The course asks teachers to think of reading as an essential communicative skill that is learned and practiced in conjunction with writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and other forms of "making sense." It offers an expanded understanding of literacy, including a consideration of socio-cultural and other contextual factors that influence how students access various kinds of text. Most importantly, the course offers teachers an opportunity to develop an array of specific strategies to help their students evolve as readers within their subject area.
