Course Description
Goals: To compare artistic and ecological methods for investigating diverse natural environments from prairies to woods and wetlands in the Twin Cities. To enhance curiosity and creativity by experiencing ways that both biologists and artists experiment and create. To enhance understanding of basic principles of both art and ecology while reawakening the senses through direct exploration of nature. Content: Examination of interrelationships of organisms in their environments as practiced by artists and scientists, with a focus on hands-on investigation. As scientists, students will learn natural history and basic principles of ecology while engaging in outdoor exploration. Students will also create outdoor research projects after brainstorming project ideas from direct observations. As artists, students will experiment with natural objects and traditional art materials to explore formal elements of design such as color, line and form. Artistic investigation will include photography, found-object sculpture and experimental drawing and painting. Prerequisites: None - No art or science background is needed or expected. The course does not count toward majors in art or biology. Because students will be making art outdoors for extended periods and walking on uneven ground, a reasonable level of physical fitness is advisable.
