Course Description
This course will examine the survival of the major myths from Greek and Roman culture in the European Renaissance literature as well as visual arts. The approach will be interdisciplinary and comparative as we examine the political and social dimension of courts as well as the literature, visual and performing arts in Renaissance Europe. Topics include the changing attitudes and applications of myth from classical authors to Renaissance poets and artists’ works accompanied by lectures on literary and art history. Vital part of the course includes focusing on primary sources, comparing the literary production with the visual arts and other representational practices that emerge and flourish within the historical context. All readings are in English.
