Course Description

Goals: To survey the complex cultural diversity that characterizes the Indigenous traditions of North America, as they have been broadly organized into culture areas. To understand the impact colonization has had on American Indians. To gain an understanding of the implications of historic and contemporary social policies for American Indians. To understand the contributions of American Indians to American mainstream and global culture. Content: Examination of the adaptive strategies employed by Indigenous North American cultures, in prehistoric, historic, and contemporary times. Examination and discussion the history of U.S. Government policy toward American Indian peoples as well as how these relate to contemporary issues in Indigenous communities. Opportunities for students to meet, hear, and interact with representatives of indigenous community members. Consideration of additional perspectives from films, archaeological, ethnographic, and artistic sources.
