Course Description
Topics: Graphic Narratives: Words, Pictures and White Space Cross-listed with MFA. Pre-Req: WRIT 3220 or WRIT 3230 or permission of insturctor (5 seats are set aside in thsi class for undergraduate students) What can writers learn from the graphic novel? What do graphic novels teach us about story structure, pacing, point of view, characterization, and time management? In this online class, we will study an array of subgenres, including memoir (Bechdel, Thompson), superhero (Moore, Miller), and young adult (Yang, Ryan). We will focus on how the text and image harmonize to create a multi layered experience that is cinematic and linguistic, and how, as writers, we can harness that interplay for narrative efficiency, emotional resonance, and dramatic irony. Discussions will be held via Blackboard, workshop will be done via letters and students will have one individual Skype conference with the instructor. No artistic ability necessary (beyond stick people). Instructor: Swati Avasthi
