Course Description

Like many urban regions across the country, leaders throughout Minneapolis-Saint Paul are increasingly focused on "equity." This focus on equity ranges from discussing racial and socio-economic disparities in political rhetoric to devoting resources intended to address and mitigate racial and socio-economic disparities. Using Minneapolis-Saint Paul as a focal point, this class will explore the contours and the effects of this equity work. Through applied research assignments, students will engage with policy makers, governmental agencies, community organizers and other groups involved in this equity work. This class will be guided by (and will possibly extend upon) sociological theories and past empirical findings on institutional racism and stratification by researching how are people are working to dismantle these systems. Given the applied research dimension of this class, students should expect to conduct research off-campus and work collaboratively to coordinate research projects and final products. Prerequisites: SOC 1110 or PSCI 1110
