Course Description
Some say sixteenth century Christian thinker Martin Luther reformed medieval Christianity. Others say Luther revolutionized Christian religion in the west, splitting it into Protestantism and Catholicism. This course will focus on reading and critically engaging Luther's own writings to try and determine whether he was more reformer or revolutionary. In order to decide how to characterize his work and his thought, the course will also attend to the larger cultural, religious, and political context of the time.
