Course Description
Goals: To introduce students to the art and culture of the Iberian Peninsula (modern Spain) from the medieval to modern period. The place-markers for the semester will be the Islamic conquest (711 CE) and Pablo Picasso’s surrealist period (c. 1950), and the principle goal will be to understand the material in its social, political and historical context. Content: Moving from the medieval to the modern period, the material will gradually shift from architecture and objects to painting and sculpture. Special emphasis will be placed on artistic implications of cultural encounters: from the interaction of Jews, Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages to contact with Native Americans in the colonial period. Readings will consist of articles, primary sources in translation and—for the later period—textbook selections. This course (at either the 1980 or 3980 level) satisfies the requirements of the Middle East Studies minor for an elective intermediate level course in Middle Eastern art.
