Course Description
Goals: To introduce students to Islamic art and architecture produced between the advent of Islam (early 7th century) to the end of the 15th century, and to understand the material in its social, political and historical context. Content: Spanning geographically from the Western Mediterranean to Central Asia, the class will focus principally on religious architecture, but it will also consider secular structures and material culture. Students will use textbook readings accompanied by short, translated primary texts in order to engage with the course material. Evaluations will be based on two in-class and two take-home examinations. No prerequisites at the 1980 level; prerequisites of ARTH 1200 and ARTH 1210 at the 3980 level. This course (at either the 1980 or 3980 level) satisfies the requirements of the Middle East Studies minor for an elective intermediate level course in Middle Eastern art.
