Course Description
The revival of Hebrew as a modern language in the last two centuries links an ancient culture and its philosophical and theological thoughts to the re-emergence of a modern cultural identity. Modern Israeli Hebrew is part of the evolution of the language since biblical times, and its study helps us acquire contemporary communication skills as well as an insight into the past by encountering the Bible in its original language. Hebrew is a vital language in Judaic and Biblical Studies, as well as in international relations and business fields in the Middle East. Beginning Hebrew is designed to develop linguistic skills through the study of a range of contemporary and ancient texts and grammatical structures, in a class environment that enhances reading and writing as well as speaking and listening proficiency. We will discuss topics and texts in their cultural context and explore Hebrew websites and other Israeli media.
