Course Description
Goals: To explore the theory and practice of democracy, authoritarianism, and democratization in various regions and states of the world. Content: Definitions of democracy; types of authoritarian states and power structures; theory or models of regime change; process of democratic transformation (e.g., liberalization, transition, and consolidation); patterns of regime change (top down or bottom up), "economics first" or "politics first" or dual transition theories. Taught: Alternate years. Prerequisite: PSCI 1430: World Politics is recommended.
