Course Description
Mental illness is a construct that is difficult to define, painful to experience or observe, and absolutely critical to understand. In this seminar, we will explore the many ways that mental illness has been conceptualized in the field of psychology, in literature, and in media presentations such as art, film and television. We will pay special attention to the stigma of mental illness and consider the ways in which different historical eras and various social, cultural and political contexts have influenced our efforts to identify, treat and prevent mental illnesses. Lectures, discussions and small group work are designed to enhance students’ abilities to read widely and think critically about complex topics. Assignments include exams, multiple short essays, and a group presentation.
