Course Description
Did you know that one in three women and one in two men will develop cancer in their lifetime? In this seminar we will explore the many aspects of cancer, including the history of the disease, its causes and treatments, and the social, psychological, political, and economic consequences of cancer. We will read popular novels and evaluate films and news media to seek answers to big questions such as "What causes cancer?" "Can I prevent cancer?" "Why haven’t we cured it?" We’ll debate the value of cancer screening tests and discuss controversies stirred up by cause marketing, genetic testing, and the recent shortages of drugs for cancer treatment. We will also have the opportunity to get involved in cancer awareness and fundraising efforts on campus.
