Course Description
Lyric Essay MFA Elective/MFA Writing This class will focus on the study and creation of the lyric essay - the hybrid form of writing that wonders, wanders, meanders, gives "primacy to artfulness over information" and concerns itself with lyricism as much as it does meaning-making. We will read and write collage essays, prose poems, braided essays, list essays, found essays, as well as watch essay films and read/watch/listen to mixed media essays. We will celebrate and study the greats of the form with Anne Carson, Michael Ondaatje, Elizabeth Smart, Chris Marker, Glenn Gould and Maggie Nelson amongst others.
