Course Description
This class will examine the history of how theatre has been used to create social change and will begin to develop our own material for social change theatre projects. We will read plays and theory about this work and we will see what is happening in the Twin Cities, visiting local theatre such as Pillsbury House, Mixed Blood and Penumbra where social change is at the heart of the work they do. We will engage in a variety of theatre exercises, exploring the work through our own bodies, voices and imaginations. We will look at issues facing the Hamline community and strategize how theatre can be used to bring these issues into focus and discussion. Final projects will include writing scripts, creating facilitation methods and exploring venues for performance. The class is meant for those interested in social change, whether or not you have theatre experience.
