Course Description
In this course we explore the writings of several influential Jewish thinkers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Martin Buber, Mordecai Kaplan, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Rachel Adler, S. Y. Agnon, Cynthia Ozick, and Yehuda Amichai. We will study their philosophical essays, poetry, social commentary, and short stories in light of the salient features of modern life, the distinctive contours of Jewish cultures, and the waves of destruction and rebirth that have shaped recent Jewish history. Their reflections on absence and presence - divine and human - will stand at the center of our study.
