Course Description
Mandatory On-Campus Classes: December 2 & 9, 2016, 3:30-5:00 PM and January 26, 2017, 3:00-5:00 PM Learn Spanish in Cuba through a historic partnership between Hamline University and the Universidad de Cienfuegos. This unique course is designed for everyone--from true beginners to native speakers--eager to learn or improve their Spanish while living, not as a tourist but as part of the community, in a country of undeniable fascination and regional importance. “Cuba: Language and Culture” takes advantage of the exceptional faculty and campus of the Universidad de Cienfuegos on Cuba’s south-central coast. You’ll spend a few hours each day taking small-group Spanish lessons, reinforced by experiential-learning activities that will get you out of the classroom and out into the community to practice your Spanish with the residents of Cienfuegos, a charming city of 150,000. Additional class time will focus on diverse aspects of Cuban history and culture. Many of these presentations will be given by local experts who can offer information and perspectives not always available to U.S. undergraduates. Several educational site visits are planned, such as a weekend in the capital city of Havana, and a day trip to the town of Palmira, home to several important Afro-Cuban religious communities.
