Course Description
Goals: In this course students explore and practice the fundamental elements of fiction, including characterization, setting, theme, scene vs. summary, plot, tension and conflict, dialogue, point of view, voice, and structure. They will apply insights concerning these elements to their own work, the work of their peers, and published fiction. Content: Students will build skills through writing exercises and the study of contemporary and classic fiction, culminating in the completion of several pieces of short fiction. The course combines lecture, discussion, reading, writing exercises and experiments, and other assignments. Taught: Annually Prerequisite: ENG 1110 or its equivalent and WRIT 3000. WRIT 3000 may be taken simultaneously with WRIT 3120. Recommended: ENG 3010 or one survey course (ENG 1210, 1220, 1230, 1240, 1250, 1270). Credits: 4
