Abstract
This project addressed the research question: how can rubrics, based on the WIDA Key Uses, assist classroom teachers in improving English Learner (EL) student writing? It begins with an explanation of past personal and professional experiences that led the author to this research question. Then, it expounds upon the existing research in regards to writing strategies and challenges for EL students, in addition to outlining the proven benefits of instructional rubrics. After that, is an explanation of the project, which is a writing rubric that includes models of what students should produce at each grade level band for proficiency levels 3, 4, and 5 in the content areas of literacy and math. Finally, the author shares major learnings and the broad implications of this project.
