Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, What are the implications for using multicultural literature as mentor texts to teach academic English language grammar structures in an elementary setting? The author describes her past personal and professional experiences as a student and teacher that led her to developing this research question. Then, the author reviews professional literature on the topics of multicultural literature, best practices in teaching ESL, and culturally responsive teaching to connect each topic to the research focus. Next, the author describes the project, which is a curricular unit of ten lessons teaching prepositions to second grade English learners through the use of the mentor text The Rainbow Weaver by Linda Elovitz Marshall. The lessons were created using the Understanding by Design framework. Last, the author explains the major learnings and implications when using multicultural literature.
