Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, what are effective ways to increase vocabulary development in emergent readers. Research was done on vocabulary strategies and why teaching vocabulary is an essential part of everyday literacy instruction. The work done by vocabulary experts Michael Graves, Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown and Linda Kucan conclude that vocabulary instruction is critical in emergent learners. A professional development session was developed in which teachers were given the opportunity to gain an understanding of a vocabulary framework to help plan and teach vocabulary. Activities and strategies to increase vocabulary development in the classroom were modeled and practiced.
