Abstract
The research question addressed in this capstone is, what are strategies to teach English language learners vocabulary in math word problems? It documents one teacher's creation of a unit in response to the low mathematics scores of English language learners on standardized tests. Low test scores impede academic success and perpetuate economic disparities within families of English language learners. The capstone presents research that shows vocabulary, linguistics, and cultural relevancy are factors in difficulty solving math word problems. The researcher used the qualitative data gathering techniques of formal interviews, archival documents and a teacher journal to form the curricular unit. The unit offers vocabulary instruction in procedural, operational, and contextual words. Also included are lessons for multiple meaning words and homonyms that are a source of confusion for students who are simultaneously learning mathematics and English
