Abstract
The research question addressed is, how does service-learning in social studies impact the overall academic success and civic engagement of students? This capstone is motivated by the author's desire to create opportunities to have both students and communities benefit from service-learning in education. It explores the critical research in the field of service-learning by experts such as James Kilsmeier and others to address the critical question. The author conducts field research with three approaches: 1) survey of college students 2) interviews with college students and: 3) interviews with principals to assess the critical question. This capstone concludes with analysis of the various research and thoughts about the future of service-learning as a method to impact student academic success and civic engagement.
