Abstract
We live in a diverse society it is important to have multicultural literature in the classroom that reflects the cultural images of students in the classroom. This research exemplifies the benefits of multicultural literature. Multicultural literature increases students' self-esteem, vocabulary, empathy, mirrors students' experiences, and helps them connect to stories that they are reading. I learned that it is important to engage students so they become lifelong readers. Research, as well as the educators interviewed, supports the benefits of multicultural literature. However, there are many challenges to incorporating multicultural literature into the classroom curriculum. I interviewed four teachers about their positions on multicultural literature in the classroom. The teachers all agreed that it is important to have multicultural literature in the classroom. However, I evaluated their classroom libraries and not all the classroom libraries aligned with these educators' positions on the importance of literature that reflected the cultural images of the students in the classroom.
