Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was: In an urban, junior high school classroom, how does a teacher move from traditional grading and classroom practices to standards-based grading and classroom practices? It reviews practices the author deems 'traditional' and counters these with the experts' research (Wormeli, Marzano, Reeves) on standards-based grading and related practices. This review of theory inspired the author to create Standards-based Grading: An Implementation Manual. She used both research and personal successes and failures with standards-based grading to design the manual and concludes that while quite different from traditional methods used by many teachers, standards-based practices are truly best practices for all students.
