Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, How can a middle-school life science unit about the Mississippi River incorporate place-based education? This capstone presents place-based education as a teaching methodology and includes a detailed 7th grade life science unit that focuses on the ecology of the upper Mississippi river. A key influence for this capstone is place-based author David Sobel. In his book Place-based education: Connecting classrooms & community (2004), David Sobel describes place-based education as learning that takes place in the local environment, includes the study of the cultural history and involves service learning as a means of improving the place in which students live. The complete unit, Ecology of the Upper Mississippi River, was constructed to be taught in any 7th grade life science with access to the upper Mississippi River.
