Abstract

The research question explored in this capstone was, How can I use the prior knowledge of ELLs to create engagement and a personal connection to the US history curriculum? This research project included an exploration of current trends in educating ELLs in US public schools and the unique challenges that mainstream social studies teachers face. A curriculum was developed to reflect effective strategies for teaching both language and content. The curriculum design includes a resource guide to be used by mainstream social studies teachers. The resource guide includes several key components and strategies that mainstream teachers can use to help students improve their English language skills while also learning content.
