Abstract
The research question addressed why students are losing their first language and how can parents and schools help to make a difference. It documents a teacher's quest to find why students are losing their first language in an urban school. Key influences include teacher's own loss of her first language, second language learners, parents, peers and administrators. The method of study was survey/questionnaire. Participants were Hmong students and parents from an urban school. Students and parents were given surveys to complete anonymously. The author presented outcomes of why students were losing their first language and recommendations on how parents and schools can help to make a difference.
