Abstract
The research question in this project was, what is the impact of poetry on reading and writing interest in primary aged students? The motivating factor for this capstone was to improve reading and writing interest with the use of poetry in the classroom. This capstone details the positive affects poetry has on students over the course of a month long study of poetry. It documents one teacher's use of poetry and shows how student interest improved, decreased, or remained the same throughout the study. The author documents the details of the unit and uses related research literature to construct meaning and validate the study. A valid study of poetry was presented to the students of a third grade classroom in order to increase reading and writing interest. My conclusion is that with the use of poetry, student interest in reading and writing increased.
