Abstract
Experiential education is a type of hands on learning. This capstone focuses on the question: what are instructional strategies in experiential education and how do they affect students' self-concept and motivation in secondary urban learners? The study compared data between a non-experiential unit and experiential unit taught to a group of ninth grade urban high school students. Both a student survey and teacher notes were used in order to evaluate the difference in student motivation, achievement and self-concept in the students following the completion of each unit. A service learning project, which is part of experiential education, was used as the culminating experience in the experiential unit.
