Abstract
The research question addressed was, what are middle school students' perspectives on the use of music as a learning tool in the science classroom? The motivating factor for this capstone was the recognition that people remember music lyrics for a long time. This capstone reviews literature involving the use of music as a learning tool for all ages and in various classroom situations. It documents one middle school teacher's creation of a music-rich science unit and her students' perspectives on the benefits and drawbacks of using content-related songs throughout the unit. The author concludes from student questionnaire responses that songs help students learn vocabulary and remember information, make classroom learning interactive and fun, yet, not all students enjoy music used as a learning tool in the classroom.
