Abstract
The purpose of this study was to uncover the factors that influence the intelligibility of an adult Vietnamese speaker of English. This study investigated the case of a young Vietnamese woman who reported ongoing English intelligibility issues despite attaining a proficient score on English exams. Personal, educational, and professional information were gathered through an interview, along with a measurement of the participant's motivation and attitude toward learning English pronunciation. Formal and informal speech samples were also taken in order to analyze problem areas. Comparing the speech samples to the interview information, the factors positively and negatively affecting intelligibility were examined. Implications for teachers and ideas for future research are also discussed.
