Abstract
The research question this Capstone addresses is, how can reading instruction in kindergarten be differentiated in order to support students and align with a Christian school's core beliefs and practices? It documents a kindergarten teacher's process of researching and implementing differentiation strategies in order to support students along a wide range of reading levels in a small Christian school. Also included in the project is research on how differentiation can be implemented effectively in a Christian or private school environment with its unique challenges and goals. The teacher's answer was to restructure the kindergarten reading block to include flexible guided reading groups and to add balance to a phonics-centered curriculum. Results showed that students with low achievement benefited most from implementing differentiation and that a differentiated reading program did not significantly change adherence to the school' s core beliefs and practices.
