Abstract
This study examined parent, student and teacher attitudes about L1 maintenance. Two fourth grade ESL students, one Spanish- and one Russian-speaking, their parents and their classroom teacher participated in separate, semi-structured interviews on L1 use. The interviews were transcribed and relevant themes were identified. The results of this study suggest that parents, students and teachers generally have positive attitudes about L1 maintenance, but vary in the amount the L1 is used in and outside the home. Correlations as well as differences between the interview responses and the current research on L1 maintenance and ideas for future research are discussed.
