Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, how can I develop a parent guide to help families create a meaningful home environment that supports the emergent literacy skills of kindergarten students? The motivating factor for this capstone was preparing students for lifelong literacy success by having a solid literacy foundation. This capstone details the importance parent involvement effects students literacy achievement. Key influences for this capstone were the five emergent literacy skills of alphabet knowledge, concepts of print, phonological awareness, expressive vocabulary and writing. The author developed a parent guide that includes activities on the five emergent literacy skills that parents can implement at home to prepare their students for a successful life long literacy journey.
