Abstract
The research question addressed in this capstone is how can a strategy resource guide be developed to support struggling first grade readers during guided reading? The motivating factor for this capstone was the author's frustration in fully meeting the complex needs of struggling readers. The author researched how students learn to read, who struggling readers are, and what struggling readers need to become successful readers. The research suggested that the following components should be included in lessons for struggling readers: familiar books, rereading and assessment, word work, writing, and a new read. The author then developed a guide based on the five suggested components that can be used in a general education setting during guided reading. The guide includes resources and activities created by the author and compiled from reputable sources that will assist teachers in implementing the five components with struggling readers.
