Abstract
This research dives into how social media supports student learning and increases their motivation. The research is divided into four parts. First, social theories are explored. Second, motivation and social media with students are discussed. Third, the effective tools for using social media are examined. Fourth, the benefits and roadblocks of social media are analyzed. Then a teacher's guide to using social media and a needs assessment are presented to align with the research. Within the teacher's guide, there are eight lessons from the subjects of English, social studies, science and math. The technology tools explained and used are Twitter, Skype, Facebook, gaming, blogs/wikis, YouTube, Flickr and Pinterest. Finally, the implications of what this means for the classroom and the limitations are shared.
