Abstract
The research question addressed is, how does small group reading instruction impact the reading comprehension of intermediate struggling readers? The motivating factor for this capstone was the challenge many intermediate students have with reading comprehension. Based on current research in the field of reading comprehension and reading interventions, the author created a group of over twenty Active Reading Tools (ART) to be used as a reading intervention curriculum for comprehension. These tools guide students to use multiple reading strategies before, during, and after reading. The strategies included are monitoring for comprehension, making connections, asking questions, determining importance, inferring, synthesizing, and visualizing. The goal of this curriculum is for students to employ active reading strategies to construct meaning from text.
