Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is: How can special education teachers and classroom teachers work together to implement a collaborative guided reading plan? This capstone details how special education teachers and classroom teachers can effectively collaborate in the area of guided reading for shared students when given a structure and time. It integrates the roles of special education teachers and classroom teachers, the practice of guided reading, and the characteristics of effective collaborators. Key influences for this capstone are Friend and Cook (2003) who defined collaboration in education as co-equal professionals voluntarily co-planning to achieve common goals. The author develops a guided reading collaboration plan that is completed during monthly collaboration meetings with teachers who work with the shared student. Teachers concluded that when given a structure and time to collaborate, their instruction improved as well as student achievement.
