Abstract

The research and curriculum presented in this capstone highlight best practices in word study found to differentiate and meet needs of students in a first grade language arts block. The literature reviewed includes top researchers in the area such as Cunningham, Allington, and Bear et al. In addition, developmental spelling stages are described in detail. The curriculum presented is set in a five day organizational framework and involves word sorts, assessments, Making Words (Cunningham, 1994), and daily high frequency word review and practice. The assessments presented are intended to provide the teacher with an understanding of where students are in their spelling development and where instruction should begin and progress. With implementation in a first grade classroom students will transfer their word knowledge into their daily reading and writing practice.
