Abstract

The research question addressed is, how can culturally relevant pedagogy be utilized to create a peer conference strategy that will foster engagement and motivation for eighth grade students when discussing writing? This capstone details research concerning engagement and motivation of eighth grade learners, culturally relevant pedagogy, and peer conferences with writing. Using the literature as a foundation, the author created curriculum that promotes learning through culturally relevant writing activities, consistent use of a peer conference protocol, and final project options that enable students to communicate their identities and learn multiple perspectives. The author details significant challenges that hindered the implementation of the unit. Qualitative data was collected during the facilitation of a modified version of the created curriculum and that data gave insight into the identities and needs of diverse, urban eighth grade learners. The author includes recommendations for methods to promote the use of culturally relevant pedagogy.
