Abstract
My research question asks: How can I create lessons and activities to facilitate student understanding of scientific research while giving students hands-on, real-life experiences that mirror the activities of actual scientists? This capstone depicts the realization that much of the American population is lacking something in their science education and my research to determine those missing pieces. This capstone includes my research of current US science curriculum and lesson plans created to address the content overlooked in science education today. Additional goals of these lesson plans include increasing (1) critical thinking skills, (2) collaboration among students and (3) authentic, real-life connections from the classroom to the real world. Finally, I discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the created lesson plans and suggest additional future steps to move this work forward. .
