Abstract

The childhood obesity rate in the United States is rising at an alarming rate. Students in today's schools are spending less time being active and more time in front of the television or video games. Many of these students also come from low socioeconomic backgrounds where their housing does not allow for gross motor movement. Test scores in schools across the country are far below other nations across the globe. The pressure on classroom teachers to meet the wide range of learning styles and abilities is great, with the main focus being on passing state standardized tests. This has resulted in students spending far more time during the school day seated and practicing reading and math skills. The curriculum in this capstone was designed to get students moving throughout the day while integrating the movement into the academic content being taught.
