Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was how can the social studies curriculum be developed and implemented using picture books for primary learners? The motivating factor for this project was the struggle to keep students engaged while reading the social studies textbook. The author developed social studies lessons form picture books and implemented them into her literacy block using strategies from The Daily Five. The second grade children in the teacher's classroom used writing journals and projects to extend their learning after listening to the stories. Observations about student engagement are noted as the teacher reflects upon the social studies lessons. The author concludes that primary learners are engaged and motivated by learning social studies topics through picture books.
