Abstract
The research question addressed in this curriculum-writing Capstone project was, What common themes emerge in creating a high quality service-learning program during out of school time hours for students in grades three through six? The curriculum was developed as a research-based toolkit for practitioners to use in out of school time programming. The project includes research that demonstrates the positive outcomes of involvement in out of school time and using service-learning as a teaching method. The author uses the Understanding by Design framework and Differentiated Instruction concepts to create five lessons that result in an eight to ten week program that begins with self-exploration and team building and continues through the entire service-learning cycle.
