Abstract
This study examined how American television programs influenced adult English learners in South Korea. Surveying Korean adults revealed their passion of being global citizens by learning to communicate in English and positive ideas about integrating American television programs into their learning. In addition, through interviews and questionnaires it was found that watching American television programs positively affected English learning experience and respondents showed confidence using conversational English. However, it had negative effects as well. The politeness of English language was not acknowledged by long-term American television viewers, and inappropriate language from television has a possibility to misguide students. Also, it left a question how easily stereotypical ideas could take place from American television programs without any guidance. The positive and negative effects from this study shed an insightful light on second language learning in relation to American television programs.
