Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, how can historical discussion increase high school students' involvement and engagement? The project documents the current research on the reasons why many classrooms lack discussion, the various types of discussion, how discussion increases student engagement and promotes democracy in the classroom, increased achievement of students, and how to establish a community in the classroom to further discussion. The author documents the creation of multiple lessons that implement discussion to promote student involvement and engagement. He documents how research supports the design of each one of the five lessons created with multiple forms of discussion to increase student involvement and engagement in the classroom.
