Abstract

The research question addressed is, how can I increase engagement and achievement levels of the gifted readers in my elementary classroom? Schools place an emphasis on below-level students because they are held responsible to increase their test scores and bring them up to grade level. This capstone details the responsibility schools should have for gifted students as well. They are often the students who learn the least because they already have the necessary reading skills. It documents a teacher's attempt at using Winebrenner's learning contracts to help motivate these above-level learners. The learning contracts were used to increase engagement and achievement levels of advanced readers in a third grade classroom.
