Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is, what best practices and strategies can be used in both the home and school setting to aid a parent in guiding the development of a young child with ADHD? It documents a parent perspective of the struggles to offer the best possible start for a child struggling with ADHD and eventually, a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The literature review presents recommendations for behavior modification/management, parent training, self-control development, social development and academic development. Through the process of writing the capstone, the diagnosis included the addition of Autism Spectrum Disorder which in turn allowed the author the opportunity to reflect more closely on her own biases, parenting and her relationship with her son. The end result is a reflective work, offering other parents and teachers an opportunity for their own self-reflection.
